Is Sake Vegan and Where Can You Find it in Cyprus

I started this blog for many reasons, namely to show you how to stay vegan whether at home or abroad. But one thing I've always tried to do is answer some super random specific questions, with the idea that I am not unique in the world, so if I'm asking it, then perhaps you are too. Enter today's topic: is sake vegan and where can you find it in Cyprus?
These two questions separately are not so unusual, but putting them together happened because of random circumstances: I was in Cyprus and my friends and I were discussing sake. Upon learning that it is (spoiler alert) almost always vegan, we set off on a (drunken) quest to find the best places to find it in Cyprus. What we discovered (another spoiler alert) is that, interestingly, in our experience the best place to find it is actually online.

Is Sake Vegan?

First things first, to non-vegans, this might seem like an odd question - of course sake is vegan. Isn't all alcohol? Well actually, a lot of alcohol isn't vegan: certain wine companies use eggshells for sifting. Certain beer companies grease their beer pipes with fish juice. (Also true for some orange juices.) The good news is sake is generally vegan - no eggshells or fish pipes here! The more complicated news is that it's not always easy to find sake with a certified vegan label. So it's up to you. For me, I am okay with sake that doesn't have the vegan label, but I understand if you're not. Assuming you're more like me, let's move on to where we can find sake in Cyprus:

Best Places to Buy Sake Online

Japanese sake exports reached ¥45.9 billion in 2025, while export volume rose to 33.55 million litres. Sake was shipped to a record 81 countries and regions, showing how far the category has moved beyond specialist Japanese restaurants and domestic consumption.

For buyers in Cyprus, that wider international reach has translated into a noticeably more varied online market. Premium wine merchants now sit alongside Asian grocery specialists, supermarkets and delivery-first retailers. This independent comparison looks at nine places to buy sake online, focusing on range, style diversity, shopping convenience, delivery options, specialist knowledge and the usefulness of each store for different types of buyers.

Online Sake Stores Compared

The retailers below approach sake in very different ways. Some offer dozens of premium Japanese bottles, while others concentrate on accessible Ozeki, a small curated selection or convenient local delivery.

1. Punin Wine

Punin Wine has operated since 2012 and combines two Limassol boutiques with an online store, mobile app and delivery across Cyprus. Its wider catalog includes more than 7,000 products, including over 500 rare and exclusive wines and spirits. Within that larger range, Japanese drinks receive considerably more attention than at most general wine and spirits retailers. The sake and shochu category contains around 30 sake listings, plus a smaller shochu selection.

The range covers several sake styles and producers rather than relying on one or two familiar labels. Examples include Dassai 23 and Dassai 45 Junmai Daiginjo, Amabuki Strawberry Blossom Junmai Ginjo, Amabuki Rhododendron Junmai Daiginjo, Urakasumi Honjozo, Hatsumago Daiginjo, Dewazakura Ginjo and Shichiken. The shop also offers more unusual bottles, such as Daruma Masamune 1989 Koshu, giving experienced buyers access to aged sake alongside contemporary premium styles.
Customers looking specifically for sake can browse the dedicated collection by producer, bottle size, strength and other filters rather than searching through a general spirits page. The wider shop also carries sake glasses, Japanese whisky, food, and other drinks, which helps build a larger order.

Best for: Buyers who want one of the broadest premium sake selections available online in Cyprus.

Company snapshot: Punin Wine has operated since 2012. It has two boutiques in Limassol, its own online store and mobile app, and a wider catalogue of more than 7,000 products.

Main services: Online ordering, mobile-app shopping, physical boutiques, sake and shochu sales, sommelier assistance, fast Limassol delivery, Cyprus-wide delivery and international shipping.

Advantages: A much deeper sake range than most general drinks retailers, with several Junmai, Ginjo, Daiginjo, and Junmai Daiginjo options. The catalogue includes both recognised producers and less common aged or specialist bottles. Delivery in Limassol starts from 15 minutes. Orders above €50 qualify for free delivery, while delivery outside Limassol normally takes 1–3 business days.

Limitations: Some specialist bottles may be temporarily unavailable, particularly rarer or premium releases. Buyers outside Limassol also depend primarily on delivery rather than visiting a boutique.

2. La Maison du Vin

La Maison du Vin is one of Cyprus’s longer-established specialist drinks businesses. Its history dates to 1992, when the family business that later adopted the La Maison du Vin name was established in Limassol. Today it combines a physical boutique with online ordering and a wider premium wine and spirits catalogue.
The sake section is relatively compact but much more varied than a typical one- or two-bottle supermarket selection. Around ten products are grouped in the dedicated category, including Akashi-Tai Honjozo Tokubetsu, Akashi-Tai Junmai Daiginjo Genshu, Bijito Junmai Ginjo, Denshin Haru Junmai Ginjo Muroka, Kitajima Natural I Junmai, Ozeki Junmai Daiginjo Sakura Beauty 45, Samurai Junmai Daiginjo and Shirayuki.

Best for: Buyers who want a curated premium sake selection from a specialist wine and spirits merchant.

Company snapshot: La Maison du Vin traces its history to 1992 and operates as an independent family business in Limassol.

Main services: Boutique retail, online ordering, premium wine and spirits, sake, specialist guidance and products for private and hospitality clients.

Advantages: The selection covers several genuine sake classifications rather than concentrating on one brand. Buyers can compare Honjozo, Junmai, Ginjo and Junmai Daiginjo styles, while product pages provide useful information about individual bottles.

Limitations: The sake catalogue is significantly smaller than Punin Wine’s. The store is also primarily a fine-wine specialist, so sake remains one part of a much broader premium drinks business.

3. Nihao Trading

Nihao Trading is an established Asian food importer, wholesaler and retailer based in Cyprus. The business dates to the early 1990s and has developed into a large supplier of Asian food and drink products. Unlike specialist wine merchants, Nihao approaches sake as part of a much broader Japanese and Asian grocery assortment.
Its dedicated sake section contains around 16 products. The range has a particularly strong Ozeki presence, with standard Ozeki sake, Platinum bottlings, Karatanba Honjozo and Nigori cloudy sake in several sizes. Choya Japanese Sake is also available, while Takahiro products include both drinking sake and cooking sake. Several products come in unusually large restaurant-oriented formats, including 18- and 19-liter containers.

Best for: Buyers looking for Ozeki, affordable everyday sake or larger restaurant and trade formats.

Company snapshot: Nihao Trading has operated in Cyprus since the early 1990s and specialises in importing, distributing and retailing Asian products.

Main services: Online sales, Asian groceries, sake and other Asian drinks, wholesale supply and large-format products.

Advantages: Strong choice within the Ozeki range, several bottle sizes and access to both drinking and cooking sake. The selection is practical for restaurants, events and customers who want familiar Japanese brands rather than only premium gift bottles.

Limitations: The catalogue is less focused on boutique breweries and high-end Daiginjo than Punin Wine or La Maison du Vin. Some prices are displayed before VAT, reflecting the company’s wholesale orientation.

4. The Spicy Store

The Spicy Store is a Limassol-based gourmet retailer with an online shop and delivery across Cyprus. Its broader catalogue contains more than 1,000 curated food and drink products sourced from over 50 countries, with Wolt and Bolt also available for customers in Limassol.
Sake is a small but premium-focused part of the range. The main options include Samurai Sake Junmai Daiginjo and Kitanohomare Junmai Daiginjo Gold. The latter is positioned as a more distinctive bottle, combining premium Junmai Daiginjo with edible gold flakes. The store’s Japanese pantry products also let you pair sake with ingredients or foods for Japanese meals.

Best for: Buyers who want a premium sake bottle alongside gourmet food and Japanese ingredients.

Company snapshot: The Spicy Store is an online gourmet retailer based in Limassol with island-wide delivery and local Wolt and Bolt ordering.

Main services: Online gourmet shopping, premium drinks, sake, Japanese pantry products, gifts, and delivery across Cyprus.

Advantages: Convenient island-wide delivery, a carefully selected gourmet catalogue, and sake options that work well as gifts or additions to a food-focused order.

Limitations: Only a few sake bottles are available, so it isn’t suitable for buyers who want to compare many breweries, grades or regions.

5. FineSpiritsCy

FineSpiritsCy is the online shop of Nick’s Bottle Shop, a family-run drinks retailer based in Protaras. The business began trading in 2014 and launched its online store in 2022. Its catalogue covers a wide range of wines and spirits, with sake in its own dedicated category of five products.
The selection includes Bijito Junmai Ginjo Nihonshu Sake and Bijito Junmai Nihonshu Sake, both made at Japan’s Kizakura brewery. Choya is available in two bottle formats, while Gekkeikan Traditional adds a different everyday Junmai-style option. The assortment isn’t large enough to compete with the deeper specialist ranges at the top of this ranking, but it gives buyers several genuinely different bottles rather than a single token sake listing.

Best for: Accessible sake choice, Protaras pickup, and customers who want sake alongside a broader spirits order.

Company snapshot: Nick’s Bottle Shop has operated in Protaras since 2014. FineSpiritsCy serves both retail and trade customers through its physical store and online catalogue.

Main services: Online ordering, physical retail, click and collect, sake and other wines and spirits, trade supply, and Cyprus-wide delivery.

Advantages: A dedicated sake category with several producers and styles, including Junmai and Junmai Ginjo. Buyers in Protaras can collect orders directly from the physical store, while domestic delivery normally takes 1–3 business days.

Limitations: With only five sake listings, the selection remains much smaller than at Punin Wine, Nihao Trading or La Maison du Vin. Shipping charges also vary by destination and order weight rather than following one simple flat nationwide rate.

6. Whisky Online Cyprus

Whisky Online Cyprus focuses primarily on spirits and maintains a separate Japanese sake category. The section is small, but its advantage is simplicity. Buyers currently have access to Samurai Japanese Sake in two bottle sizes rather than having to search through a general wine or Asian grocery catalogue.
The available Samurai bottlings include a 30 cl expression at 18% ABV and a larger 72 cl version. The smaller bottle is particularly useful for buyers who want to try the style without purchasing a full-size bottle. Product information includes basic tasting notes and production details.

Best for: Buyers looking specifically for Samurai sake or a smaller introductory bottle.

Company snapshot: Whisky Online Cyprus is an online spirits retailer with dedicated categories for whisky and selected Japanese drinks.

Main services: Online spirits sales, Japanese sake, and detailed product pages.

Advantages: Straightforward shopping, a clearly separated Japanese sake category, and two bottle sizes of the same style. The 30 cl option lowers the commitment for first-time sake buyers.

Limitations: The sake selection is very narrow. Buyers interested in comparing Junmai, Ginjo, Honjozo, Nigori, aged sake or several producers will find much broader ranges elsewhere.

7. SupermarketCy

SupermarketCy was founded in 2011 as a Cyprus-focused online supermarket. Its model differs from specialist drinks retailers because customers can combine alcohol with groceries, household goods, food, and everyday essentials in a single scheduled order. Delivery coverage depends on postcode, and the platform uses selectable delivery dates and times.
For sake, the offering is much narrower. Choya Sake 750 ml is available as a standard retail product, making SupermarketCy useful primarily for customers who already use the service and want to add one bottle to a larger grocery basket.

Best for: Adding an accessible bottle of sake to a regular online supermarket order.

Company snapshot: SupermarketCy has operated since 2011 as an online supermarket serving customers in Cyprus.

Main services: Online grocery shopping, alcohol, scheduled delivery and mixed household orders.

Advantages: Customers can order sake alongside food and other everyday products. The platform also lets customers choose an available delivery slot before completing the order.

Limitations: The sake selection is extremely limited compared with specialist retailers. A €40 minimum order also makes the service less practical if sake is the only product being purchased.

8. EAST101

EAST101 is a Pan-Asian and Japanese food business in Limassol with its own online ordering system for delivery and takeaway. Unlike most businesses in this ranking, it approaches sake from the restaurant and food-pairing side rather than as a dedicated alcohol retailer.
Its online drinks section currently includes Japanese sake such as Dewazakura in a 300 ml bottle and Hatsumago Biho Sparkling Sake in a 300 ml format. The range is limited, but the bottles can be ordered together with sushi, sashimi and other Japanese dishes through the same checkout. That makes EAST101 particularly useful for customers who want sake for a meal rather than for building a home collection.

Best for: Ordering sake together with Japanese food for delivery in Limassol.

Company snapshot: EAST101 is a Limassol-based Pan-Asian and Japanese food business with online ordering, delivery and takeaway.

Main services: Japanese and Pan-Asian food, online ordering, local delivery, takeaway, and a small selection of Japanese drinks.

Advantages: Sake can be ordered alongside a complete Japanese meal, and the available 300 ml bottles are convenient for one dinner or for buyers who don’t need a full 720–750 ml bottle. Dewazakura also gives the selection a recognisable premium Japanese producer.

Limitations: EAST101 is primarily a restaurant and food-delivery business rather than a sake specialist. The range is therefore limited to only a few bottles and isn’t suitable for comparing many breweries or classifications.

9. Oenon Gefsis

Oenon Gefsis is a Nicosia wine and spirits retailer with online delivery through platforms including Wolt and Fetch. Its broader catalogue includes wine, Champagne, spirits, gifts, delicatessen products, mixers, accessories and chocolate.
The sake range is small but focused on premium styles. Listings include Kitanohomare Junmai Daiginjo Gold and Samurai Junmai Daiginjo. These options give Nicosia buyers access to higher-grade sake through local delivery without needing to place a larger specialist order elsewhere.

Best for: Nicosia customers looking for premium sake with local online delivery.

Company snapshot: Oenon Gefsis is a Nicosia-based wine and spirits shop with physical retail and online delivery options.

Main services: Wine and spirits, gifts, delicatessen products, local delivery and online ordering.

Advantages: Premium Junmai Daiginjo options, gift-oriented products and a broader drinks catalogue that allows customers to combine sake with wine, Champagne or other spirits.

Limitations: Only a few sake products are listed, and individual bottles can move in and out of stock. The store is therefore more useful for a specific local purchase than for detailed sake comparison.

How We Selected the Stores

The ranking is based on current retailer catalogues, company information and online delivery options. We considered seven main criteria:

  • depth of the sake selection
  • variety of producers and sake classifications
  • online ordering convenience
  • delivery availability in Cyprus
  • access to small, premium or unusual bottle formats
  • physical-store or specialist support
  • complementary Japanese food, gifts or drinks

We placed greater weight on stable catalogue depth and shopping functionality than on temporary prices or promotions. We also distinguished cooking sake from bottles intended primarily for drinking when assessing each range's usefulness.

How to Choose an Online Sake Store

Start by deciding whether you want an everyday bottle or a more refined style such as Ginjo, Daiginjo or Junmai Daiginjo. Check bottle size carefully, because sake comes in everything from small 180-300 ml formats to standard 720-750 ml bottles and large catering containers. First-time sake buyers may prefer a smaller bottle. For premium sake, compare brewery, polishing grade, alcohol level, and serving recommendations. Also check whether the product is drinking sake rather than cooking sake, especially when shopping through Asian food suppliers.

Final Thoughts

Buying sake online in Cyprus now ranges from deep premium catalogues to convenient supermarket, gourmet, and food-delivery options. Punin Wine ranks first because it combines around 30 sake listings with premium producers, several classifications, aged bottles, two Limassol boutiques, and delivery across Cyprus. La Maison du Vin offers a smaller but carefully curated premium range, while Nihao Trading is particularly useful for Ozeki and larger formats.

The Spicy Store adds a gourmet angle, while FineSpiritsCy offers a compact, dedicated sake category with in-store pickup in Protaras and Cyprus-wide delivery. Whisky Online Cyprus and SupermarketCy suit simpler purchases, EAST101 combines sake with Japanese food, and Oenon Gefsis provides a local premium option in Nicosia.

FAQ

What is the best place to buy sake online in Cyprus?

Punin Wine ranks first in this comparison because it combines one of the broadest dedicated sake ranges with premium producers, several classifications, online ordering, a mobile app and delivery across Cyprus. The best choice for an individual buyer can still depend on whether they want premium Junmai Daiginjo, an affordable everyday bottle, a small tasting size, physical pickup or sake ordered together with food.

Which online store has the largest sake selection in Cyprus?

Punin Wine has one of the deepest dedicated ranges in this comparison, with around 30 sake listings in its sake and shochu collection. Nihao Trading also carries a substantial selection, particularly within Ozeki and larger formats. La Maison du Vin offers a smaller but more tightly curated premium range, while FineSpiritsCy currently has five sake products in its dedicated category.

Can I order sake for delivery across Cyprus?

Yes, but coverage differs by retailer. Punin Wine and The Spicy Store offer island-wide delivery, while FineSpiritsCy delivers orders across Cyprus in about 1-3 business days. Other businesses, including EAST101 and Oenon Gefsis, focus on local delivery zones.

Where can I collect sake in person in Cyprus?

Several retailers combine online ordering with physical locations. Punin Wine has boutiques in Limassol, La Maison du Vin also operates in Limassol, and FineSpiritsCy offers pickup from Nick’s Bottle Shop in Protaras. This can be useful when you need a bottle quickly or prefer to collect an online order rather than wait for courier delivery.

What is the difference between Junmai, Ginjo and Daiginjo sake?

Junmai indicates sake produced without added distilled alcohol. Ginjo and Daiginjo use more highly polished rice and brewing techniques intended to produce a more refined, aromatic style. Junmai Ginjo and Junmai Daiginjo combine the Junmai requirement with those higher polishing classifications. Individual flavor still varies considerably between breweries and bottlings.

Is sake always served warm?

No. Serving temperature depends on the style. Many premium Ginjo and Daiginjo sakes are commonly enjoyed chilled or cool because lower temperatures help preserve delicate aromas. Some Junmai and Honjozo styles can work well at room temperature or gently warmed. The producer’s serving recommendation is useful because heating can either improve or flatten a particular sake.

Is cooking sake the same as drinking sake?

Not necessarily. Some Asian suppliers sell sake specifically intended for cooking, often in larger formats and with a different flavour profile from premium drinking sake. Always check the product description before ordering. Nihao Trading, for example, sells both drinking sake and dedicated cooking sake, including large formats aimed at restaurants and catering.
